A rise in “just add alcohol” events has been sweeping the nation, including luxury movie theaters, nail salons and boutiques. Shown by the popularity of “paint nights” at dozens of restaurants in the area, the South Shore prefers its cocktails mixed with creativity.
At paint night, participants 21 and over unleash their inner Picasso by painting their own replica of a certain subject. The instructor gives step-by-step instructions, but encourages guests to add their own flair. The $30 lesson covers paint, brushes, a canvas, easels and appetizers.
Turner’s Yard, a popular gastro-pub in Pembroke, first hosted the social event in May. There was such high attendance that they didn’t have enough easels. The restaurant booked Pour Artist owner and Instructor Heather Martin of Weymouth for the rest of the year.
“It’s a creative alternative to just going out for a cocktail,” Martin said. “When you’re here you forget about work, bills and stress. You’re only focused on having fun.”
Fun, rather than precision, was definitely the theme of the paint night at Turner’s Yard on Thursday, August 22, where 30 women showed up for the lesson. While Martin gave detailed instructions on how to paint a bouquet of flowers, students laughed over their mistakes, gave updates on their kids’ whereabouts, raved over the food, and tagged themselves on Facebook.
“Most of these people work in white-walled offices where they can’t be artistic,” Sharon Browne, of Hull, who learned about the event through her friend, who sat beside her, Cathryn Liscombe of Pembroke. “It’s a fun way to go out with friends while being creative.”
Despite the carefree tone of the event, many participants showed up wary of their artistic abilities, claiming they could only produce stick figures. Liscombe said she was stressed as she first picked up her paintbrush, while Martin laughed and assured her that no experience is necessary.
“People come in here every time saying ‘I can’t do this’” Turner’s Yard events manager, Jan Nguyen, of Pembroke said. “They’re amazed when they leave with this beautiful painting.”
Sheila Palumbo, of Hanson, used to be nervous when she first starting attending paint nights – but that was months ago. Now, she has become one of Martin’s regulars. She recruited friends to join her, and even hired Martin for an upcoming event at her church.
“It’s a great night full of food, friends and alcohol,” Palumbo said, with her friend and fellow regular, Deb Johnson of Cedarville. “Then you get to walk away with this beautiful piece of art. We’re huge fans.”
If you can’t make it to an event with the Pour Artist, check out the dates at Paint Nite and Sip, Dip, and Dabble, which also host local paint events.
Like Martin, June Alexandra of Sip, Dip, and Dabble also has impressive turnouts for her paint events. She said she believes it’s so popular because anyone can do it.
“People are so amazed and proud of themselves when they see what they’ve accomplished at the end of two hours,” she said. “So amazed, in fact, they come back and bring a friend.”
IF YOU GO . . . .
